Culion @ 120:
Spreading the Light with Hope
The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres joyfully celebrated 120 years of joyful missionary presence in Culion, Palawan, giving thanks to God for His faithfulness and blessings. The celebration gathered the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres and lay counterparts who conducted medical, surgical, and dental outreach services, catechetical activities, and distribution of food packs and hygiene kits.
These celebratory activities were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the congregation’s Health, Education, Pastoral and Formation ministries and partners. The event was further enriched by the inspiring message of Bishop Broderick Pabillo and the participation of community leaders, healthcare workers, and local residents during a talk he gave on the morning of May 25, 2026.
The highlight of the celebration was the Thanksgiving Mass in the afternoon of May 25, 2026, that gathered the Sisters and the people of Culion to thank the Lord for the legacy of the pioneering SPC Sisters who began serving the people of Culion in 1906 and all the Sisters who came after them.
As the congregation marks this milestone, it renews its commitment to continue spreading Christ’s light, hope, and compassionate service to all with conscious preference for the most neglected.
The assembly commenced on October 3, 2025 in the evening with an opening prayer accompanied by symbolic offerings: candles, a crucifix, the Bible, and the logo of the SPC Pastoral Ministers. These sacred symbols represented the mission we have gratefully received and wholeheartedly embraced from God. Sr. Ma. Consuelo Cells, SPC, Assistant Provincial for Pastoral Ministry, led the orientation and perspective-setting session. She inspired us to be joyful witnesses of our consecrated life—kindled by hope, empowered by grace, and sent on mission.
The second day began with the celebration of the Holy Mass, reminding us to anchor our being in Christ—the source and goal of our mission. Mr. Xavier Alpasa, fondly known as Prof X, facilitated a workshop using the Theory of Change. This guided the Pastoral Ministers in discerning the desired transformation in our ministry, reflecting on the inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes of our mission.
The SPC Pastoral Ministry is grounded in three key areas:
1. SPC Institutional Development (Sr. Christy Joy E. Salimbagat, SPC as the Coordinator)– focusing on the well-being of SPC Sisters (Ad Intra) and financial support for the apostolate of Pastoral Houses.
2. Holistic Formation (Coordinator: Sr.Romina Manalaysay, SPC) – providing catechesis and pastoral care for families.
3. Integrated Community Development ( Coordinator: Sr. Josephine Sombrero, SPC) – emphasizing Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) as a way of life, with a strong focus on care for creation. Balancing the intensity of the workshop with moments of rest and fellowship, we nourished our spirits through prayer, shared meals, and hearty laughter with the Sisters of St. Paul College Bocaue—a testament to the unity and deep bonds among us.
